The Indian government plans to spend more than $13 million establishing a special ranger force to protect the country's endangered tigers, following pressure from international conservationists to save the wild cats.

The funding proposed Friday by Finance Minister P. Chidambaram follows the announcement just weeks ago of a $153 million program to create new tiger reserves, underscoring renewed efforts by India's government to protect the big cats.

New estimates suggest India's wild tiger population has dropped from nearly 3,600 five years ago to about 1,411, the government-run Tiger Project said last month.

"The number 1,411 should ring the alarm bells ... The tiger is under grave threat," Chidambaram told Parliament during his budget presentation for 2008-2009.

Chidambaram said the National Tiger Conservation Authority would be granted about $13.15 million to "raise, arm and deploy" a Tiger Protection Force. While the budget is just a proposal at this stage, Parliament is widely expected to pass it without opposition later this month.

Conservationists welcomed the government's proposal, saying a new force would need to be specially trained and armed to protect tigers from poachers.

"They are finally addressing a very important problem — poaching," Belinda Wright, director of the Wildlife Protection Society of India, said Saturday. "I would imagine that much of the existing system would be improved by the injection of the funds."

The Tiger Project plans to create eight new reserves to protect the tigers, covering an area of more than 11,900 square miles at a cost about $153 million. Private groups will contribute extra funding.

Some 250 villages, or an estimated 200,000 people, will be relocated under the plan. The government has promised each relocated family about $25,600.

The population of tigers in Asia is estimated at around 3,500 today compared to nearly 5,000 in 1997, according to Wright.

Unless the government drastically improves enforcement steps against poachers and illegal wildlife traders, the number of tigers will continue to dwindle, Wright said.

The number of tigers in the world has diminished at an alarming speed in recent years, global conservation group WWF cautioned on Wednesday, blaming poaching for much of the decline.

"We are left with roughly 3,500 tigers all around the world now," Bivash Pandav, a tiger specialist at the World Wildlife Fund, told AFP, pointing out that "five years back, the estimate was around 5,500 to 6,000."

In India, which is home to nearly half of the world's tigers, or 1,400 animals, the number of the big cats has shrunk by 60 percent over the past three to four years, Pandav said during a visit to Sweden.

A century ago, some 40,000 tigers roamed the Indian subcontinent, according to the WWF, which singles out poaching, widespread destruction of the tigers' natural habitat and human hunting of their prey as the main causes of today's dire situation.

"Poaching is primarily to meet the demand for tiger bones in traditional Chinese medicine ... That's the immediate reason behind the decline of tigers," Pandav explained.

"The situation is pretty bad in the sense that they (the tigers) are rapidly being wiped out from many parts of their range," he added.

On the Chinese market, a dead tiger can be worth "tens of thousands of dollars," according to the WWF, while the United States is the world's second largest market for tiger products.

Despite the daunting challenge of preserving tiger populations, Pandav insisted that "there is definitely hope," pointing out that big cats "are prolific breeders (and) produce large numbers of offspring."

"Despite all the problems, there are a couple of places in India (where tigers) are doing pretty well," he said.

To rectify the overall situation however, the animals need access to forests, food and undisturbed habitats, Pandav said, insisting that the main priority was to protect the tigers from poachers and put "pressure on China to stop the farming of tigers."

"The Chinese government is actively planning to legalise the trade (of tiger products) and if they legalise this trade then the demand for wild tigers is going to increase manyfold," he said, pointing out that people preferred products from wild tigers over farmed animals.

"That is going to be the death blow for the tigers in the wild," he said.

India's rare Royal Bengal Tiger population has plunged to 1,411, drastically lower than the estimated 3,700 believed to exist five years ago, officials said Tuesday.

Rajesh Gopal, who heads Project Tiger, a conservation programme launched in the 1970s, unveiled the latest figures and blamed "poaching, loss of quality habitat and prey" as the main reasons for the decimation.

The census, which took almost two years to complete, counted the big cat population inside dedicated reserves and those in forests, said Qamar Qureshi, a scientist with the Wildlife Institute of India which conducted the survey.

An earlier survey in 2002 had estimated the number of tigers in India at 3,700 -- with the population of those in protected sanctuaries estimated at 1,500.

Conservationists have long complained that many Indian forestry posts lie vacant, while the staff that do exist have little in the way of funds, making them no match for poachers.

Tiger parts are used in traditional Chinese medicines, although international trade has been banned since 1993.

Despite the alarming drop in numbers, both Gopal and Qureshi insisted "there is still hope" for saving the tiger and salvaging the programme touted as one of India's most successful conservation efforts.

The results of the latest survey offers authentic data as it used "more detailed and scientifically sound" techniques than earlier ones based on paw tracks, Qureshi told AFP.

"When you say about 3,700 tigers in 2002, that was just an estimate. So it is difficult to say whether the numbers have halved or not."

The latest numbers however "does not include the tigers in the Sundarbans," the world's largest mangrove forest straddling the Indian-Bangladesh border.

"We are still developing the methodology to count the tigers there, because of the difference in habitats," he said, but declined to give an estimate of numbers living in the mangrove forests.

Lucy is a 3 year old white "kitten" with gray patches. I have had her since she was a 8 weeks old. She was rescued at 2 weeks old . Her rescuers believed that her mother died or was injured soon after her and her brother Linus were born. She was in foster care being nursed back to health for the first 8 weeks of her life. Because she didn't get mother's milk, she is very small for a full grown cat and still looks like a kitten. She is definitely a people cat, the way many cats are who are weaned early, but she is not clingy, in fact quite independent.

She was adopted from Pets Unlimited on Fillmore where she was spayed and got a microchip. She is fully immunized and had just had a vet check up and is healthy. She is currently/indoor outdoor cat. Her food of choice is dry Whiskas. She needs to sleep indoors at night and likes to go out to play and sunbathe during the day if outdoors is accessible. She loves chasing a laser pointer and jumping to catch toys with feathers. She is very affectionate once you get to know her, but takes a little bit to warm up. She has been an only cat for the majority of her life and though she can eventually get used to other cats in her environment, she does experience some anxiety around that due in most part to being much smaller than most other cats.

She need a new home because I recently moved in with my partner and he's just not a cat person. Unfortunately Lucy's presence is having disastrous affects on our otherwise amazing relationship which is not healthy for any of the 3 of us!

A lost Fido is more likely to be found than a missing Tabby.

Why? Because man’s best friend is more likely to have identification tags and dog owners are more prompt in searching for their missing pets, according to a new study.

The findings, published in the Jan. 15 issue of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, found that while 71 percent of lost dogs in the Dayton, Ohio, area were reunited with their owners, only 53 percent of lost cats ended up back at home.

“Dogs seem to be easier to get home to their owners,” study author Linda Lord of Ohio State University told LiveScience.

Dogs vs. cats

In her survey of people who ran lost pet ads in local newspapers, Lord found that dog owners contact and visit shelters much sooner than cat owners after the pet goes missing. More than one-third of the recovered dogs were found after a call or visit to a local animal shelter.

Dogs are also more likely to sport tags or carry an ID chip implant, Lord said.

Cat owners may not put identification on their cats because the cat shirks the collar or they keep the cat indoors.

“Just because you keep your cat indoors doesn’t mean you don’t have to identify them,” Lord said. Cats still can slip out of the house.

When people find cats without identification, they might assume they are strays and feed and adopt them, whereas people who see a dog wandering alone are more likely to assume it has an owner, Lord said.

Many cat owners also wait several days before calling or visiting shelters. They run the chance of missing their cat, which could be euthanized or adopted by someone else.

Of the study cats that did make it back to their owners, Lord said, two-thirds came back on their own.

Pet-finding tips

The key to finding a lost pet is visible identification, Lord said. If someone finds your pet, they can call the number on the ID tag without having to involve the shelter system. While microchips are a great backup, they are not visible to the naked eye and require shelters or veterinarians to scan them, she said.

Lord also emphasized that it is important to act quickly when looking for a missing pet by calling local shelters after one day, visiting every three days, putting up posters and even taking out newspaper ads.

The pet owners Lord interviewed were often surprised to hear about methods they hadn’t tried.

“There was definitely a lack of awareness,” she said.

Though different methods may be more or less effective in different places, Lord said, “people really need to think about having a plan.”

FDA Investigators Say Chinese Companies May Have Added Melamine to Appear to Boost Protein Content
By DAVID KERLEY and BRIAN HARTMAN

April 19, 2007 — - For the first time, investigators are saying the chemical that has sickened and killed pets in the United States may have been intentionally added to pet food ingredients by Chinese producers.

Food and Drug Administration investigators say the Chinese companies may have spiked products with the chemical melamine so that they would appear, in tests, to have more value as protein products.

Officials now suspect this possibility because a second ingredient from China, rice protein concentrate, has tested positive for melamine. So has corn gluten shipped to South Africa. That means there is a possibility for another round of recalls.

The FDA's top veterinarian, Stephen Sundlof, says finding melamine in so many products "would certainly lend credibility to the theory that it was maybe intentional."

Melamine, which is used to make plastics in the United States and as a fertilizer in Asia, contains nitrogen. Nitrogen can appear to boost the level of protein in products.

The revelations have led the FDA to expand the number of products it is testing as they enter the United States. So far, those inspections at the border have not turned up any melamine in wheat gluten. Tainted wheat gluten used by Menu Foods is suspected in sickening hundreds, if not thousands of pets.

Some of the tainted pet food has apparently made it into feed for hogs. Federal agencies are trying to determine if it was actually fed to animals and whether it may have reached the human food supply.

Government testing found a chemical used to make plastics in recalled pet food linked to the deaths of dogs and cats, officials said Friday.

The Food and Drug Administration said it found melamine in samples of the Menu Foods pet food, as well as in wheat gluten used as an ingredient.

Cornell University scientists also have found the chemical, also used as a fertilizer, in the urine of sick cats, as well as in the kidney of one cat that died after eating the company's wet food.

Menu Foods recalled 60 million containers of cat and dog food earlier this month after animals died of kidney failure after eating the Canadian company's products.

It is not clear how many pets may have been poisoned by the apparently contaminated food, although anecdotal reports suggest hundreds if not thousands have died. The FDA alone has received more than 8,000 complaints.

The new finding comes a week after scientists at the New York State Food Laboratory identified a rat poison and cancer drug called aminopterin as the likely culprit. They've since detected melamine as well, though it's not clear how that chemical would have poisoned pets.

Meanwhile, animal rights advocates called on federal food safety regulators and pet food companies to expand a nationwide recall of dog and cat food to include dry varieties, claiming they make pets sick.

The FDA said Thursday it had no plans to suggest a wider recall to pet food companies, and veterinarians said they have not seen a trend of animals becoming ill after eating dry pet food.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals plans to make the appeal Friday in Washington after it said it received complaints from pet owners who claim their animals suffered kidney failure after eating dry pet food.

Norfolk, Virginia-based PETA wants the FDA and the companies to extend the recall to foods that have received complaints, chemically test it and perform necropsies on the animals involved. It also wants companies prosecuted if the FDA's probe turns up wrongdoing.

FDA spokeswoman Julie Zawisza said she did not know how many of the complaints the agency has received have concerned dry pet food. Officials at Ontario, Canada-based Menu Foods, which made the recalled pet food, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Nearly 100 brands of pet food were recalled after animals suffered kidney failure. The recall involved "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food. The recall covered products carrying names of major brands including Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba.

Veterinarians aren't seeing a trend of pets getting sick off dry food, said Paul Pion, founder of the Veterinarian Information Network. He said since so many people use dry food, you would expect to see many more ill pets if the food was tainted.

"I wouldn't put much credence in it, but it's not out of the realm of possibility," Pion said.

The Veterinary Information Network reported Tuesday that at least 471 cases of pet kidney failure have been reported since the recall, and more than 100 pets have died. (Full story) Menu Foods has confirmed 16 pet deaths.

UNION, N.J. (AP) -- Pet owners were worried Saturday that the pet food in their cupboard may be
deadly after millions of containers of dog and cat food sold at major retailers across North America
were recalled.

Menu Foods, the Ontario-based company that produced the pet food, said Saturday it was recalling
dog food sold under 48 brands and cat food sold under 40 brands including Iams, Nutro and
Eukanuba. The food was distributed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico by major
retailers such as Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway.

An unknown number of cats and dogs had suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the
affected pet food, the company said.

Many stores that sold the affected brands frantically pulled packages off shelves.

So, I got my current kitty back in april from a lady off freecycle. She's a wonderful cat and i love her dearly. I had to move from colorado back with my parents for a few months in WV. My parents have 4 cats and 1 dog. at first my kitty was really nervous/scared about the other animals and wouldnt come out of my room for about 3 months. Now she gets along great with the other cats and the dog. I never planned on staying with my parents for very long and i left jazzy(my kitty) with my parents while i went to find a job in another city. I got a job and want to bring my kitty down here with me. The only problem is, the people i'm staying with have two dogs and arent really used to living with cats. This will be the third time i've taken jazzy to a new home, just when she was getting used to where she was at. The room i'm staying in isnt very big and i know if i bring jazzy down here that she wont come out of that room for awhile because of the dogs.

So is it selfish of me to want to bring her down here? I miss my kitty so much and i want her with me but i know she is happy and getting taken care of very well at my parents house.

I'm torn and i need some advice!!

I answered a post on craigslist for a couple who moved to Denver from Philly. They had a orange tabby tom whom they could no longer keep. He wandered into their home from the streets of Philly, a true alleycat, a year or so ago. They've had him fixed and he's had all of his shots. He's 3yrs old and I thought just shy from his travels.

Then I realized that they never knew how to calm him down from his feral lifestyle. I had just adopted another Calico from a friend. The female - Ginger, was hit by a car last year and is finally healed with a pin in her hip. She can no longer be an outdoor cat and all of my friend's other cats are in/out types. So she gave Ginger to me to be completely indoor.

So, now he hides and she pesters him insessantly. I kept them apart for the first week and 1/2, but this is extremely difficult in a one bedroom condo. He acts afraid and very feral 24/7. He won't let me come near enough to him to love him. (I've had cats my whole life and have NEVER had one afraid of me other than feral ones.) I've been sweettalking him, purring at him, making sure he has: food, water and box near at hand. I make sure they are seperate for at least a few hours everyday so he can do his thing without being cowed by my crazy little calico.

My biggest positive sign towards his comfort levels coming up - when I got up this morning I found him in the bathtub. He immediately freaked at being caught out of his hiding place, and streaked back to it. But he was out and moving around with Ginger! (Of course she chased him as soon as he bolted, but I removed her from the bedroom and his hidey hole ASAP)

Any words of advice on how to tame the beast? Or is it too late and I have taken on the care of a forever wild animal? I feel bad for the little guy, he deserves as much love and attention as Ginger. He deserves to feel safe and secure within his new home. Am I doing something wrong or will it just take time or is it just highly improbable to ever work out?

Thank you ahead of time for the help.

Here's an example of one reason why I find purebred cat/dog breeding disgusting:

In January 2006, another cyclops kitten photo did the rounds of the internet. Cy, short for Cyclopes, was a Ragdoll kitten born with only one eye and no muzzle. The owner, Traci Allen, raises Ragdolls in Redmond, Oregon. The litter contained only 2 kittens, this one and a normal sibling. Cy, photographed by the owner as a newborn (the fur appears slick from amniotic fluid rather than fluffy and dry), died after living for one day, was one of two in the litter. Many blogs and boards have claimed the photos to be fake, but have no knowledge of cranial defects to support their opinion. It is not a fake. Although kittens do not open their eyes for 2 weeks, Cy has no eyelids and cannot close the eye (compare this with the black kitten where the eye proturdes from the skull). The eye is still moist, either from amniotic fluid or possibly from being moistened by the breeder (even normal kittens are sometimes born with open eyes). The bottow rim of the eye is incompletely fused. Although the head appears to be normal size, the eye is disproportionately large and occupies most of the central facial area - this is due to the abnormal growth of the facial structures associated with cyclopia. The internal structure of the eye may also be defective i.e. lacking the pigmented area which appears blue in normal kittens. The head is an abnormal shape with no muzzle and with the mouth presenting as a slit below the eyes.

I posted the picture in the photo album. Everyone 'should' see Cy.
Why Cat and Dog Cancers Are On The Rise: Trash Pet Food

1. Slaughterhouse inspection line speed doubled during the Reagan
years. Many cancer ridden animals got through. Those who did
not.. were forbidden for human consumption and put in pet food.

2. Animals killed at shelters are often taken to rendering plants
from which they are put into pet food.
www.madcowboy.com Rendering plants also expose
dogs and cats to Mad Cow, Mad Pig, Mad Fish, Mad Chicken, Mad
Deer etc. www.maddeer.org

Dog Food May Carry "Mad Cow Disease"

May 26, 2003
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that a Canadian cow that tested positive for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, also known as “mad cow disease”) may have been used to manufacture dry dog food, some of which was reported to have been shipped to the United States.

The Canadian government prevented the BSE positive cow from being processed for human food.

3. The European Union has banned the practice of putting female hormones,
carcinogens, in the food of cows,
sheep, pigs etc. However the US government has not.

4. There are many more carcinogens (cancer causing agents)
in the environment. Factory farms and feedlots dump trillions of gallons
of urine and feces into the water systems of the planet.

5. The hazards of antibiotics injected into 'food' animals
are not known.
The health hazards of commercial meat-based pet foods are extensive, and difficult to avoid. They may include slaughterhouse waste products; 4-D meat (from dead, dying, diseased or disabled animals); old or spoiled supermarket meat; large numbers of rendered dogs and cats from animal shelters; old restaurant grease, complete with high concentrations of dangerous free radicals and trans fatty acids; damaged or spoiled fish, complete with dangerous levels of mercury, PCBs and other toxins; pathogenic bacteria, protozoa, viruses, fungi and prions, and their associated endotoxins and mycotoxins; hormone and antibiotic residues; and dangerous preservatives. The combined results are rendered so delicious to cats and dogs by the addition of ‘digest’ - a soup of partially dissolved chicken entrails - that more than 95 % of companion animals subsist primarily on commercial meat-based diets

Fish are at the top of the ocean food chain and concentrate arsenic,
chromium, mercury, pcb's, pvc's, pbb's, lead, and tens of thousands
of other toxins dumped into the ocean. Rachel Carson wrote
that fish flesh concentrates poisons at rates of 100 to 1000 times
the concentration in the seawater or lakewater.

MAD FISH DISEASE

Factory farmed fish are being fed bone meal, which causes
piscean spongiform encephalopathy or Mad Fish Disease

Prions are so contagious that gardeners, Japanese, British
and others have gotten Mad Cow from contact with bone
meal put on their roses.

Prions are ending up in the ocean as well.

STOMACH CANCER

Japan, Korea, Chile, and other heavy fish consumers are in the
top 5 in stomach cancer, an excruciating disease.

The natural life expectancy of a dog or cat is sometimes double
or triple what the average dog or cat lives..
Vegetarian dogs and cats live into their 20's

Vegan cats love veggieburgers, and soycheeses. Every one
is different.

OTHER CONCERNS

A diet heavy in fish or meat has high levels of trioxypurine or uric
acid which block the urethras of cats and dogs and cause kidney problems.

SOLUTION

A group of hundreds of MD's recommend vegan diet for dogs, and
even for cats.

More and more corporations are turning to vegan pet food

a. to prevent legal liability
b. to save money
c. because vegan diet for pets is healthier, kinder, and better
for the environment

------
MORE FROM VETERINARIAN DR ANDREW KNIGHT

It's www.vegepets.info

Unsurprisingly, diseases described in the scientific literature following long-term maintenance of cats and dogs on commercial meat-based diets include kidney, liver, heart, neurologic, eye, muscoloskeletal and skin diseases, bleeding disorders, birth defects, immunocompromisation and infectious diseases. As a practicing veterinarian I agree that so-called degenerative diseases such as cancer, kidney, liver and heart failure are far more common than they should be, and that many are likely to be exacerbated or directly caused by the numerous hazardous ingredients of commercial meat-based cat and dog diets.

On the other hand, studies and numerous case reports have shown that nutritionally sound vegetarian companion animal diets appear to be associated with the following health benefits: increased overall health and vitality, decreased incidences of cancer, infections, hypothyroidism, ectoparasites (fleas, ticks, lice and mites), improved coat condition, allergy control, weight control, arthritis regression, diabetes regression and cataract resolution.

Although reports of animals that have been harmed by nutritionally inadequate vegetarian (and meat-based) diets do exist, these are of little scientific relevance to an examination of the viability of nutritionally sound vegetarian diets. There is no scientific reason why a diet comprised only of plant, mineral and synthetically-based ingredients cannot be formulated to meet all of the palatability, nutritional and bioavailability needs of the species for which they are intended. In fact, several commercially-available vegan (no animal product) pet diets claim to do so, and have jointly supported a healthy population of thousands of vegan cats, dogs and ferrets (who are also naturally carnivorous) for many years.

The number of people who have become vegetarian for the sake of the animals, the environment, or their health, is very large (see www.VeganOutreach.org if you’re still unconvinced of the merits of vegetarianism for you and the world around you). The amount of good this has done is barely calculable. Yet most of these caring people nevertheless continue to feed their companion animals meat-based diets, in many cases causing as much harm as if they themselves ate meat (the average medium-sized dog or three cats consumes roughly the same quantity of meat as a human). They choose to do so out of fear of adverse health consequences of vegetarian companion animal diets, and ignorance of how these might be avoided.

Consequently www.VegePets.info was created to assist animal guardians, animal carers and veterinary personnel who wish to gain a sounder understanding of the health and nutritional issues associated with meat-based and vegetarian companion animal diets. Included are advice on transitioning to vegetarian pet food; on safeguarding the health of companion animals - particularly cats; on links to suppliers of vegetarian pet foods and nutritional supplements; and all the essential scientific and anecdotal information I've been able to locate on this topic after extensively searching the biomedical literature, and reading the main books in the field. Please email me if you learn of a new scientific study of animals maintained on nutritionally complete and balanced vegetarian or commercial meat-based diets. Thank you, and enjoy the site!

Stop press!!! The first study of the long-term health status of cats maintained on a nutritionally sound vegan diet has now been completed. We enthusiastically await its publication in a veterinary journal in 2005-2006, and will upload the results once they become available. Learn more about this very important new study at:
* "The Truth About Cats and Dogs," (Ann Martin, article): "The pet food industry -- a billion-dollar, unregulated operation -- feeds on the garbage that otherwise would wind up in landfills or be transformed into fertilizer. The hidden ingredients in a can of commercial pet food may include roadkill and the rendered remains of cats and dogs. The pet food industry claims that its products constitute a "complete and balanced diet" but, in reality, commercial pet food is unfit for human or animal consumption."
ANIMAL PROTECTION INST>
* "What's Really in Pet Food," (Animal Protection Institute): "What most consumers don't know is that the pet food industry is an extension of the human food and agriculture industries. Pet food provides a market for slaughterhouse offal, grains considered "unfit for human consumption," and similar waste products to be turned into profit. This waste includes intestines, udders, esophagi, and possibly diseased and cancerous animal parts." [excellent, detailed, good starting point]
dogs and cats from shelters.. to be cannibals. This is the process
by which Mad Cow Disease started.

Hello all! :)
I've found myself a kitten not to long ago, May sometime. She a pretty little tabby. I named her Twisp. She's my baby and I love her. BUT... she has a habit of picking at the bottom of doors. How can I get her to stop doing this? The real problem is that she does this when I'm not around. So there's nothing I can do about it as it's happening. Is there something I can put on the door to make it less appealing of a habit to continue?
And how do I get her to scratch the scratching post? She seems to go for wood more then carpet (like the doors). Can I rub catnip into the post or something? Will that work?

Any help on this matter would be awesome!
Thanks,
Synchromesh.

California Veterinary Medical Association is filing a lawsuit against the city of West Hollywood to challenge the law that prevents the declawing of cats in that city. There is a gathering to protest this CVMA lawsuit. Details follow...
CVMA FIGHTS FOR THE RIGHT TO MUTILATE

The CVMA has scheduled a press conference for tomorrow, March 6, 2005 at 10 am at Laurel Pet Hospital in West Hollywood (7970 Santa Monica Blvd., 323-654-7060, at Laurel Canyon and Santa Monica Blvds.) to announce their suit against West Hollywood's ban against declawing.

Why the California Veterinary Medical Association wants to spend its time challenging the will of the 37,000 citizens of West Hollywood when it could be working to end pet overpopulation or other serious issues is as puzzling as it is disturbing.

CVMA's British brethren, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, calls declawing "mutilation." Declawing is considered unethical by almost all the veterinarians in the rest of the world.

It would be a shame if protestors spoiled their nice press conference.
