urinating cat

I need some serious help. I have a cat who is pooping and peeing in our basement living room. I'm not sure how to stop her. I've seen her use the litterbox, I have a feeling she's doing it out of angry because she hates our dog, won't come out around him, she'll stay under the bed or in my bedroom. I've tried extra attention, but i'm running out of idea's, I keep the box extremely clean and unfortunetly I can't close up the basement, it's an open area, does anyone have any idea's on this? how I can stop this habbit, maybe clean the area with something? I read that once cats start peeing somewhere it's hard to break, but I'm really tired of the smell in the basement and even more tired of hearing my husband complain about this.

yes ~ 'revenge' peeing is one of the most difficult problems to solve with cats ~ they seem to be MUCH better at 'revenge' than we can even fathom with our human brains.....

one of the things that I've seen work (at least until another solution is found) is lining the places they have peed with aluminum foil ~ for some reason cats seem to have an aversion to peeing on it..... but thouroughly cleaning the areas with enzyme cleaners may help prevent a habit from forming & keeping the dog & cat separate is most likely a necessity, at least until the cat 'gets used to things' (& understand that she may NEVER adjust happily)

giving the cat extra attention may not be the most effective plan ~ as the cat is only going to be aware that you understand the situation ~ I'd try & train the dog to stay away from the cat ~ dogs are MUCH more easily trained in this way

    love all-ways,

Wow. . .aluminum foil! That's a neat idea, I wonder if it would work for other anti-cat purposes, such as the Stay-Off-of-Things project? I'm gonna try it.

I do keep the dog and cat seperate, the dog isn't allowed in the bedrooms/hallway, only the livingroom and kitchen, which of course is where we spend most of our time, so she can't get to us and when the dog is out of the house, she'll creep out but if you make one sudden move she's gone

have you tried moving the litterbox? the cat may just object to where it is now ~ even setting up two litterboxes may help

This doesn't sound like revenge to me. This sounds like your cat's scared.

given that, I'm even more inclined to think it's fear. Do you have just one litterbox? Where is it located? Is it possible that the dog scared her while she was using it? I would suggest getting extra litterboxes and putting them in a place(s) where she can feel safe.

well the one litter box is in my bedroom and the dog is not allowed in that part of the house, but I think you're right I'm going to try a second litterbox in the basement where she's been doing, it can't hurt to try it out

well any other tips are certainly welcomed! I would gladly get rid of the dog (i'm so not a dog person) but my son is attached and I just can't do that, i've tried the feliway a long time ago and it didn't do anything, so any other idea's i would love to hear, just in case this doesn't work, i can go on to plan B, then C, please don't let there be a d

oh yeah ~ peeing outside the litterbox can also be a sign of a urinary infection that is making the cat uncomfortable ~ then the cat attempts to get your attention by peeing in places that make you 'uncomfortable' ~ if this seems a possibility, a trip to the vet can test for that, to at least rule it out if she doesn't have one

Yes! Definitely get your cat to a vet to rule out anything physiological.

Lindy, have you tried one of the covered litterboxes? Some cats like privacy when they go to the bathroom. Maybe she goes in that spot because it is quiter and secluded? My cats love the covered litter boxes. Also, I have one cat , she likes to pee outside the box and I took her to the vet and they ruled out and infection. She just goes outside the box. I put puppy pads under or just in front of the litter box to catch the pee. Hope this helps.

if your cat is not going in the litter box, it is very likely that there is something physical going on. see if you notice the cat walking, standing or sleeping in any odd positions. even if you don't, it could still be physical. remember cats are very private creatures and will hide stuff from you (like if they are sick) my vet told me that we often put human emotions on cats, such as "he is angry, so he is going to the bathroom", which isn't really true. it's usually a dominance issue. you can be giving the cat plenty of love, but if it feels like the dog is in his space, or in his spot, or eating his food, THAT'S going to be what the real problem is. and contrary to popular belief, litter box avoidance is more common with cats who have covered litter boxes. it has something to do with the way they find their smell.

i swear im not a know it all; i spent $5000 on my cats last year because of UTIs, bladder stones, and litter box avoidance.
if you want to know anything else, im sure i could dig up mounds of information that my vet gave me. i hope it gets better soon!
